Hi, I'm Andy
I am an engineer, musician, and designer whose passion is spaces, sound, and their effects on us. This focus has followed me throughout my life. I listened as my mother, who is deaf on one side, struggled in loud restaurants, left out of conversation. My early experiences in choirs featured singing in art museums, cathedrals, and historic homes, hearing how the sound shifted in each space. My undergraduate capstone projects focused on bedroom production, addressing the instruments, equipment, and setting and how they affected the art and the person. My internships and jobs in audio recording allowed me to experience how different spaces affected the performances of the musicians and final recordings. My Masters thesis used the resonant frequencies of churches obtained through acoustic measurements to create vocal compositions, making the acoustics of the space an instrument in the piece. I have used my education and work experience to bolster my knowledge of how sound moves and how it is transmitted as well as how it is composed and experienced. Now using my knowledge of acoustics, signal processing, and sound, I want to improve the aural experiences of musicians and non-musicians alike.
EDUCATION
2023-2024
M.Phil. in Music & Media Technology
Trinity College Dublin
The MMT program is interdisciplinary in nature covering programming, acoustics, composition, sound engineering, and even graphic design. For my final thesis, entitled Acoustic Informed Approach: Site-Specificity and Choral Composition, acoustic measurements were taken in two churches and choral pieces were written for each space using the resonant frequencies of each space to inform the melodic and harmonic properties of the composition.
2019-2023
B.S.E in Electrical Engineering
Case Western Reserve University
At CWRU I completed a dual degree. My electrical engineering concentration was systems & control, particularly focusing on signal processing. My final capstone was completed in a team. We created a modular drum sequencer which you can learn more about here.
2019-2023
B.A. in Music Performance
Case Western Reserve University
For my music degree, my focus was on popular voice. Through this program I learned music theory and singing techniques ranging from jazz to musical theater to pop. For my final capstone, I created an E.P. at the end of random road using bedroom pop techniques and wrote about the intersection of gender and the bedroom pop genre as well as the democratization of audio recording.
