Case in Point A Cappella

Case in Point (CiP) is the premiere mixed voice a cappella group from Case Western Reserve University. I was in the group all four years of undergraduate from 2019 to 2023. I served as the treasurer from 2019 to 2020 and then music director from 2020 to 2023. While in the group, I arranged many songs including two competition sets for the International Competition of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). I also was part of the choreography team for both ICCA sets. I sang many solos while in the group including one in each of the four ICCA completions we completed. While in the group, at ICCAs we won 4th place at the Midwest Quarterfinal in 2020, 1st place at the Midwest Quarterfinal and 2nd in the Midwest Semifinal in 2023. During the 2023 quarterfinal we also won Outstanding arrangement for myself, Outstanding Soloist for Zion Thomas, and Outstanding Choreography for the choreography team including myself.

2019 - 2020

Freshman Year

During my freshman year, I was elected to the position of Treasurer. I sang a duet for a medley of "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody" by Fergie and "I Won't Dance" by Frank Sinatra. Again in a duet, I sang part of "House of Memories" originally by Panic! at the Disco for our 2020 ICCA set. This was the first time CiP had ever competed. This set placed 4th in the Midwest ICCA Quarterfinal. We also began learning my arrangement of "River" by Charlie Puth but the pandemic cut our year short. After going virtual, we recorded two of the tracks from the ICCA set, "Movement" and "That's What I Like" as well as our tradition song "I Want You Back" and released them on the EP Displacement. I also designed the cover art for this EP, featuring our logo and the image of the Cleveland metropolitan area in the background.

2020 - 2021

Sophomore Year

My second year in the group was completely virtual. I became a section leader for the soprano section and led virtual rehearsals in which we learned a number of songs including two of my arrangements, "loney" and "If I Go" however only the latter was recorded. In the winter, I became the music director and ran both group and sectional rehearsals as well as edited the arrangements submitted by the group. I also became the video editor creating videos for our ICCA set and our three other videos that year. We participated in ICCAs virtually with the single song "Weight in Gold" originally by Gallant for which I soloed.

2021 - 2022

Junior Year

During junior year, we performed a number of my arrangements including our 2022 ICCA set as well as "No Roots," "Dead to Me," and "Book of Love." I continued as music director, now running in person rehearsals. I soloed on "Weight in Gold" which we had recorded virtually during the previous year, a duet for the song "Book of Love," and a duet in the ICCA set for the song "Close to Me." We were invited to perform our version of "Weight in Gold" for the Holidays in the Cle TV broadcast by channel 3 wkyc studios.

2022 - 2023

Senior Year

During my final year in the group, I continued as full music director through the winter and continued to aid in teaching music and choreography through the end of our competition season. The arrangement I am so far proudest of is the competition set made for CiP in 2023. The group won Outstanding Arrangement, Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Soloist (Zion Thomas), and 1st place in the Midwest Quarterfinal as well as 2nd place in the Midwest Semifinal. The 10 minute continuous set was built to tell a story of dark feelings coming into bright feelings and togetherness. I sang the solo for the first song of the set "I Know What They're Thinking." During the year we also sang my arrangements of "Your Teeth in My Neck" and "River."
